Police have arrested Safia Khatun, a former Member of Parliament representing the reserved seats for women from the Chakaria-Pekua upazila of Cox’s Bazar, in connection with the murder of a student during the mass uprising.
Safia, also former president of the Mohila Awami League was arrested around 10:10pm from the Balughat area of Pallabi, Dhaka, said Talebur Rahman, deputy commissioner (media) of Dhaka Metropolitan Police.
She was produced before a Dhaka court today.
Safia was arrested as her involvement with the murder of the student, Akram Khan Rabbi was found in the CCTV footage, the DC said, adding that an intelligence report also implicated her with the murder.
On the afternoon of July 19, leaders and activists of various Awami League-affiliated organisations opened fire on students and citizens participating in the protest near Abul Taleb School in Mirpur-10.
Akram was struck by gunfire while crossing the road and was rushed to Dhaka Medical College Hospital, where he was declared dead on arrival.
Akram’s father, Faruk Khan, filed a murder case with Pallabi Police Station on August 25.
