These boxes were part of  Lane's "Girl Graduate Program" and I am providing some information that was found online:
Lane miniature cedar chests were not a "salesman sample." In the 1950s and 1960s, these chests were purchased from Lane by furniture dealers (for a couple of bucks each) to gift to girls graduating from high school. The girls were invited to visit the dealer to pick up their gift. This is why we see these chests branded with a store name, and city/state. High schools provided lists of the girls and their home addresses so the invitations could be mailed out.  Many girls graduating from high school in those years never went on to college, and would get married and begin to build a home, buying furniture. So this program was very popular with retailers as a way to connect with future customers.  It was called the “Girl Graduate Program” and boxes from that program are highly collectible.
