ANTIQUE AMERICAN FOLK ART WROUGHT IRON ROOSTER WEATHERVANE
Handsome Early Iron Hand Constructed Primitive Folk Art Weathervane.
This great big Rooster guy was found in Nantucket. A mid 1800s piece, this original Folk Art Handmade Piece it is an outstanding piece, both in style and in size.
The Rooster is cut out of heavy sheet metal in one large piece from the beak to the wonderful stylized tail, from the top of the head to his fancy little feet.
There is a long narrow piece of metal riveted along the rooster's tail to hold those fancy tail feathers in place, though they do have some minor bends/dents from years of wear.
Pieces of metal are riveted to the center of the body to create a solid holder for the iron pole that slides on the side of the center body.
The pole is attached to a heavy metal 18" by 6" stand which holds the Rooster about 2" off of the base making it easy to display this extra large piece.
With the stand, the rooster is about 38" tall, and about 36" from the beak to the tail.
The rooster is in good antique primitive condition, with expected dents as you would expect from years of wear.  He has the remains of some gilted paint.
I love this piece but I overestimated the size of my house when I bought him.  He needs a bigger space to rule the roost.
