Seller Lot #20044-CA-TR.Lane miniature cedar chests, and those like them, were not a "salesman sample." In the 1950s and 1960s, these chests were purchased by dealer’s (for a couple of bucks each) to gift to girls graduating from high school. The girls were invited to visit the dealer to pick up their gift. This is why we see some chests branded with a store name. The High Schools provided lists of the girls and their home addresses so the invitations could be mailed out. Most girls graduating from high school never went on to college. They would get married and begin to build a home, buying furniture. So this program was very popular with retailers as a way to connect with future customers. It was called the “Girl Graduate Program.” This information comes from a person who worked for Lane in the early 1970s.
